FAQ: Training paces

What is a lap?

Each lap of a standard track is 400 metres (just under a quarter of a mile) .

What is an effort? What it the interval?

A track workout is split into efforts and intervals. The effort is the fast running; the interval is the rest between. In track training, the time between the efforts is often important.

What are the race paces and why do they matter?

The race paces are used to calibrate the speed at which you should do the workouts. Based on your target race time, they are the equivalent pace at which you would need to race each distance. Workouts are calibrated to the pace at which you would race those distances.

What is a set?

In some workouts, the efforts are grouped together into sets. There is usually a longer rest between sets than there is between efforts within a set.
